A glossary of Toastmasters and ToastHost terminology.


A

Ah-Counter : A meeting role responsible for tracking filler words (um, ah, er, etc.) used by speakers.

Area : A geographic grouping of 4-6 clubs within a Division, overseen by an Area Director.

Area Director : A district officer responsible for supporting clubs within a specific Area.


B

Base Camp : Toastmasters International's online learning platform where Pathways education content is delivered.


C

Club Officer Training (COT) : Training provided by districts for club officers, required twice annually.

Competent Communicator (CC) : A legacy Toastmasters achievement, now replaced by Pathways levels.

Competent Leader (CL) : A legacy Toastmasters leadership achievement.


D

Distinguished Club Program (DCP) : Toastmasters' system for recognizing club achievement through 10 goals.

District : The largest geographic organizational unit in Toastmasters, typically covering a country or region.

Division : A geographic grouping of Areas within a District, overseen by a Division Director.

Division Director : A district officer responsible for supporting Areas within a specific Division.


E

Evaluator : A meeting role providing constructive feedback on a prepared speech.


F

Functionary : Meeting roles other than speakers and evaluators (Timer, Grammarian, Ah-Counter, etc.).


G

General Evaluator : A meeting role overseeing all evaluations and providing overall meeting feedback.

Grammarian : A meeting role tracking language usage and introducing a "Word of the Day."


I

Ice Breaker : The first speech project in any Pathways path, where members introduce themselves.


L

Level : A stage within a Pathways path (Level 1-5), each containing multiple projects.


P

Pathways : Toastmasters International's education program, offering 11 learning paths.

Path/Pathway : One of 11 specialized learning tracks in the Pathways program.

President : Club officer responsible for overall club leadership and governance.

Prepared Speech : A speech planned and practiced in advance, typically from a Pathways project.

Project : An individual learning activity within a Pathways level.

Sergeant at Arms (SAA) : Club officer responsible for meeting logistics and venue setup.

Secretary : Club officer responsible for club records and correspondence.


T

Table Topics : Impromptu speaking segment where participants give short speeches on random topics.

Table Topics Master : Meeting role leading the Table Topics segment.

Timer : Meeting role tracking speech times and signaling speakers.

Toastmaster of the Day : Meeting role serving as the master of ceremonies for the meeting.

Treasurer : Club officer responsible for club finances.


V

Vice President Education (VPE) : Club officer responsible for meeting programs and member education.

Vice President Membership (VPM) : Club officer responsible for membership recruitment and retention.

Vice President Public Relations (VPPR) : Club officer responsible for club promotion and public image.

Voting : Process of selecting Best Speaker, Best Evaluator, and Best Table Topics.


W

Word of the Day : A vocabulary word introduced by the Grammarian for members to use during the meeting.
